This year, Pā Reo became the 38th LBC project from around the world to become 7 Petal Living Certified. See Our Living Future Projects Map for a map of certified buildings.
Today, we begin each week with a post about an imperative of the Living Building Challenge, a total of 20 imperatives, starting with I01 Ecology of Place, with Pā Reo as a case study.
The first imperative of the Place Petal is I01 Ecology of Place. This is how Pā Reo achieved this imperative.
The Pā Reo project at Te Wānanga o Raukawa, Ōtaki Campus, revolved around rejuvenating a brownfield site that was once home to relocated and reused structures, Waitapu and Rangatāua. These buildings no longer served their purpose.
Intertwined with the landscape's rejuvenation was the vision to resurrect the site's historic wetlands, shedding light on lost treasures from the past.
The project orchestrates a harmonious blend of modern development and ecological reverence in a region marked by its wetland heritage.
Ngāti Raukawa is a part of the regions ART Confederation of Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa ki Whakarongotai, and Ngāti Raukawa ki te tonga.
Ultimately, the Petal endeavours at Te Wānanga o Raukawa to embody a holistic approach to sustainability, breathing new life into the land while honouring its historical, ecological, and cultural roots.
