Pureora

Aerial

Walkway

Located at the edge of pristine bush near where early protests against native logging took place in the 1970s, the proposed Pureora Aerial Walkway was to be a tourism venture where visitors could walk amongst the trees on an elevated pathway.

Designed as a big lean-to, the visitors’ centre is grounded into the site on one side with a nine-metre wall of glass on the other, connecting the building to the bush. Internally, the building ramps up so that visitors naturally move through the building and onto the walkway creating a seamless transition between the building and the aerial path.

Working closely with the client, a Māori Trust, the site was designed to facilitate Pōwhiri protocol.
